There are several options for search engines on your iPad. You can easily swap it for another. Choose the Settings menu and tap Safari, followed by a tap on Search Engine. Choose your new search engine from the list. You will be presented with the options of Google, Yahoo or Bing to use.

As soon as we could, we got hold of an Apple iPad to give people a review into Apple"s tablet device of the future! It wasn"t easy, many orders got put back due to the massive demand for them, especially in the states where orders were put back as much as a month.

Although many critics were saying there wouldn"t be the demand in this country due to the hefty price tag, the public have very much proved them wrong with massive sales here in the UK.

Prices start at £429 for the Wi-Fi 16GB version and work there way up to £599 for the Wi-Fi 64GB flavour. For this review we will be looking at the 32GB Wi-Fi model, for the 3G version you will have to chuch another £100 into the equation (which we haven"t done).

First question...... why is the Apple iPad such a hot topic among tech-heads? Well basically it has completely changed the publics perception of the tablet computer. No more are people looking at them as the big clumsy devices that are meant to fill a niche but do so badly. Apple has filled the gaps by providing an easy to use operating system that was designed for a mobile tablet device such as the iPad or iPhone, rather than having to use a computer operating system designed to be powered by a processor that is at least 8 time as powerful. Its easy to use on screen keyboard and fantastic spell-check software makes typing an e-mail or just entering data a breeze.

The iPad does a lot of things better than previous tablets even when you look at hardware. Its portability is a massive pro, it looks like something straight from the future and features a very powerful processor in terms of portable technology. The battery life is also a huge selling point of the Apple iPad as it just goes on for ages with quick charging times.

Although it does just seem to be a really big iPhone it isn"t. It sports so much more features and performs better at pretty much everything that tablet computers did before it.

So you want to know about the spec?

Well, the screen resolution is 1024x768 on a 9.7inch screen. This is much bigger than the iPhone which is 480 pixels by 320 on a 3.5inch screen.
All storage is solid state (SSD) which makes loading times a lot faster for the operating system and the software and also helps consume less energy. The iPad comes in 3 flavours when looking at storage, it starts at 16GB, moves on to a medium sized version of 32GB and last but not least a 64GB version to serve even the mightiest of MP3 collections, although when you start talking video you could fill that in a day with today"s modern broadband speeds.
Processing power is also a hot topic with the Apple iPad, it contains a 1GHz Apple A4 processor that"s based on ARM technology, which has been around for donkeys years and is constantly being updated and brought into the future. It can handle all the audio, 3D processing and other tasks the user throws at it.

When it comes to power and battery life the Apple iPad is a cut above the rest. Everything is all working to the same tune and all controlled via the processor to ensure that it is running at its optimal speed while balancing power usage. The battery, although not accessible and changable by the user is a cutting edge Lithium-Polymer which can outperform many of the traditional tablet computers while the operating system takes advantage of what power it has available and uses it efficiently. For a Wi-Fi iPad you can expect to get 10 hours of use time when you are surfing the web, playing videos or listening to music for example, but expect to get a lot less when your trying to max out the CPU as obviously the device will be less efficient. Compare this to the Apple Macbook and you see that you certainly get a lot more usage per charge if you are only doing less CPU intensive tasks, but worse on more demanding jobs.

So how much does it weigh? Weighing in at a meagre 680g you will barely notice that this device is in a pocket or in a bag. A lot less heavier than laptops but obviously more noticeable than a PDA or large mobile phone. You couldn"t slip it into a pocket, you could try but I wouldn"t advise it.

A massive shame is that it doesnt come with a built in camera, I"m sure it must have been thought of during design but obviously voted against. This would have really added a lot more functionality to the iPad, even a basic iPhone camera which is good for quick snap would have been suffice. This would have led to Skype video calls and other video programs being more useful and possibly incited software developers to move in other directions. The sound that comes from this device is pretty good even though the speaker seems to be the same as the iPhones, but it seems that Apple have made the best from it with software.

This is my basic review of the Apple iPad, I"m pretty happy with what it does and even though I didn"t think I would find much use for it, I HAVE!

What is the Best Selling Apple iPad Tablet?

Many would think the 64gb 3G iPad tablet would be the best selling iPad tablet, but surprisingly it"s not! According to our consumer statistics for the month of May 2010, the 16gb iPad Wi-Fi version was clearly the leader by a margin of 2 to 1 over the 64gb 3G version. Why? Well one obvious reason is the price point. The 16gb iPad has an introductory retail price of just $499 and this price has remained pretty stable among resellers. This is due to Apple"s marketing plan. It appears that Apple manufactured an abundant supply of 16gb WI-Fi tablets which lead resellers, like the many vendors in eBay, to swoop them up and relist them in hopes of making vast returns. Well as it appears, the profits are not nearly what eBay sellers were hoping for. As it appears, many eBay retailers are all trying to cash out at the same time, thus flooding the market with 16gb iPads. This is in no way benefiting the resellers as it keeps the prices low, but it is definitely beneficial to the buyers, making it the most affordable and best selling iPad tablet right now. Buyers are able to purchase the 16gb iPad in most instances for exactly what they would pay online through Apple or at an Apple retail store location, but without the long anticipated waiting/shipping period. Paying a few extra dollars through eBay for shipping and forgoing the average 3-4 week waiting period from purchasing directly from Apple, is unquestionably the preference among consumers wanting to get this device in their hands.

The 32gb iPad tablet on the other hand is the least best selling iPad according to our statistical sales data. It appears that consumers either want an affordable new innovative gadget that"s fits within a comfortable budget like the entry level iPad or they want all the gusto that the 64gb 3G has to offer. The 64gb 3G iPad tablet is the second best selling iPad tablet among consumers. The suggested retail price is $699 for the Wi-Fi version or an additional $130 for the 3G functionality, which brings the grand total to $829 + tax but that"s only if you order it directly from the online Apple store or you"re put on an Apple retail store waiting list. The waiting list can be up to 30 days and people want them now! This is why eBay resellers that are lucky enough to have a few in stock are now selling the 64gb 3G for a premium. In some cases consumers are paying up to $400 over the suggested retail price just to get their hands on one of these little babies.

Whether you purchase a 16gb or a 64gb (with or without 3G connectivity), you will be more than satisfied. Why? Unless you plan on turning your iPad into some type of super movie theater with tons of movies on it, I wouldn"t be too concerned. This is why... the average downloadable application uses between 1kbps to 30mbps. There are a total of 1024mbps in 1gb. So, 16gb X 1024mbps = 16,400mbps of useable space. A 16gb iPad tablet that averages 30mbps per app would allow you up to 546 apps. Even the larger apps like Apple iWork only use 52.9 Mbps of space.

What about the issue of purchasing a Wi-Fi iPad (without 3G service) and regretting it later when you find yourself in areas without a Wi-Fi connection? Well, it looks like you"re covered there too. It was just released that Verizon is jumping onboard with their version of a battery operated 3G-converter-to-Wi-Fi device. The Wi-Fi signal can then be picked up by your Wi-Fi iPad. Thus, giving it the ability to take an ordinary Wi-Fi iPad and instantly turn it in to a super iPad with 3G availability. Wow, a $499 iPad tablet with portable internet access! The only thing Verizon is going to have to work on is their traditional 2 year contract that is usually accompanied with their service plans and a monthly rate that can compete with AT&T"s incredibly low $14.99 data plan. What The Data Says About How We Spent Christmas Morning

The kids woke up, the parents got called out of bed and for a few hours, shockingly, it looks like the family put down their mobiles on Christmas morning, according to data from Mixpanel, a mobile and web analytics company.Welcome to the data-driven Christmas. A day that can be tracked in detail by mining the data on our phones and tablets. As proven by Mixpanel, data analytics can now tell when we open our presents, take a break and then once again immerse ourselves in our apps.

But tracking the data through mobile devices is no different in many ways to other media. For years, marketers have known the habits of people on Christmas Day. They could track what people did through the way we listened to the radio or watched television. But the difference now is the list of items in our homes that can be tracked. And the list will only grow as wearables and other things transmit data of their own.

For now, let’s look at what Mixpanel learned about us this Christmas. The company analyzed 1.2 billion mobile ”actions” on Christmas Day, which is a 66 percent increase over last Christmas.  All told, 90 percent of activity was generated on mobile apps.

 

It looks like people started opening presents at about 10:30 a.m. across all time zones. That’s when there was a dip in data traffic. A spike came at noon and by 2:30 p.m. folks were back in force with their heads down in their devices.

As the day progressed, 58 percent of traffic was coming from gaming apps. A mere 11 percent of traffic came from social networks. The theory is that kids went on to play games while the adults in the house documented the mayhem of the morning. Mixpanel states that they have more customers in the gaming vertical than in the social space, which could influence or skew their results.

In all, about 25 percent of all data came from tablets, up from Thanksgiving, which showed 15 percent of activity coming from the mobile devices.

It’s unquestionable that iOS is leading over Android when it comes to holiday shopping. But it’s what can be learned about people’s shopping behaviors that the marketers want most. The IBM holiday benchmark data, for example, shows that people who use tablets spend more than those who use their smartphones. Tablets accounted for 19.4 percent of all online sales compared to smartphones, which accounted for 9.3 percent. Tablet users also averaged $95.61 per order, versus smartphone users, who averaged $85.11 per order.

The more interesting angle is about the growing list of devices that marketers can track. The table, the chair or the thermostat will all be tracked. But it’s the variation in data activity that interests Ryan Spraetz, co-founder and chief product officer at keen.io, which provides custom analytics based upon data from different sources such as an iPad or any other device.

The usage curves will look different for thermometers versus mobile devices, Spraetz tells me. It’s in that difference and the correlations in the data analytics that will let us know when Dad sits on the couch with the embedded sensors and checks the sports scores on his shiny new iPad.

Few would argue that Apple’s design for the Mac Pro isn’t unique. It’s been compared to Darth Vader’s iconic look from the original Star Wars movies, and in a less flattering light, called the “trash can” Mac. It’s the modern monolith of desktop computing, and indeed it does harken forward to a future age where the amazing engineering contained within is required for your everyday computing needs.

As it stands, of course, the computer housed within that sleek black shell will obliterate any task thrown at it by all but the most extreme and demanding of professionals. Apple might not be as fond of the so-called ‘moonshot’ as competitors like Google, but it gives great immediate futurism with the Mac Pro in terms of both design and performance.

The modularity of the new Mac Pro is not the same as it was with the older versions. You won’t be swapping 3.5mm HDDs out of bays, for instance. But the outer shell slides off easily once you’ve unlocked it, and you get full access to the RAM bays (upgradeable to a maximum of 64GB via four 16GB modules), as well as to the SSD units (which, while Apple-specific, are upgradeable too) and the GPUs (also theoretically replaceable with future Apple-specific hardware). But the real modularity comes via the external I/O: Thunderbolt 2 can theoretically display 4K video while simultaneously transferring it thanks to a unified 20 Gbit/s throughput rate, and there are six ports on the back, combined with four for USB 3.0.

This, combined with the unique thermal core Apple has created, makes for an incredibly small, quiet professional workstation machine. In testing, I couldn’t hear it unless I put my ear up close, and even then it’s a relatively quiet hum, not even close to the fracas my Retina MacBook Pro makes when it’s doing heavy lifting. It breathes a light exhaust of air through the top, too, which is actually a nice refresher if you’ve been slaving away in Final Cut Pro all day.

Performance

For the layperson or everyday computer user, the new Mac Pro will seem like a thought-based computer, where virtually every input action you can think of results in immediate response. Whether it’s the Xeon processor or the super-fast PCIe-based SSD or those dual workstation GPUs, everything seems slightly but impossibly faster than on any other Mac, even the most recent iMac and Retina MacBook Pros. To be honest, it’ll be hard to go back even for everyday tasks like browsing the web and importing pics to iPhoto.

But that’s not what the Mac Pro is for: It’s a professional machine designed to help filmmakers create elaborate graphics, 3D animations and feature-length films. It’s aimed at the most demanding photographers, working in extreme resolutions and doing batch processing on huge files. It’s for audio producers, creating the next hit album using Logic Pro X and low latency, high bandwidth I/O external devices.

For me, Final Cut Pro was bound to be the wrench that would otherwise throw my existing Mac setup some trouble. On the Mac Pro, FCP X ran like a dream, rendering and publishing in the blink of an eye. I had to pinch myself to prove that I wasn’t dreaming after it took fewer than 10 seconds to render and publish the final edit of a 1080p video a little over two minutes long. And again, nary a peep from the Mac Pro itself.

The Mac Pro has some unique abilities that you won’t find in any other Mac, including the ability to power up to six Thunderbolt displays at once. I ran two Thunderbolt Displays plus a 21-inch iMac, as well as a Wacom 13HD through the HDMI port, and Apple’s premium machine didn’t even break a sweat. This is definitely the computer for the video producer who wants to be able to monitor output in real time while working on some raw video at the same time, or the information addict who feels they just aren’t getting enough with the two or three displays that represent the maximum possible output with a MacBook Pro or iMac.

Another great feature is the upgradeability, which ensures that, as futuristic and ahead-of-the-curve as this Mac already is, it’ll be even more future-proof thanks to the ability to swap out components down the road. Apple hasn’t revealed any details about later upgrade kits, but it’s reasonable to expect that RAM, SSDs and even GPUs will be available for those who feel they need even more out of their maxi Mac.

One final subtle but very nice feature is the auto-illumination of the ports that happens when you move the Mac tower itself. It’s extremely useful for helping you plug the right device into the right port when you’re looking to add new devices, and likewise when you’re looking to unplug something. This kind of attention to detail only reinforces that if you have $3K to spend on a Mac, your money’s in good hands with Apple.

Bottom Line

The Mac Pro is almost absurd in terms of its abilities. It’ll blow away any ordinary computer user, including one with even slightly advanced demands like myself (occasional video editing, plenty of Photoshop, some digital graphics and podcast production). But in reality, my Retina MacBook Pro wasn’t straining under the demand of my needs, either – the Mac Pro merely makes it all seem effortless.

That said, it’s rare that a computer is an investment; mostly these days, you buy one with the expectation that you’ll probably need another in two years’ time. The Mac Pro, somewhat like the iPhone 5s, is designed with the future in mind, so that video producers who aren’t working on 4K but will be expected to in a few years don’t have to reinvest.

For anyone who’s been looking forward to a replacement for their aging gray tower Mac Pro, and for anyone who has the money and is willing to spend it, the Mac Pro is a no-brainer, but for the rest of us, we needn’t reach quite so high to touch the sky when it comes to Apple’s line of OS X hardware.

Well, a recent infographic from HTC sheds some light on the anatomy of an Android update — detailing all the steps involved from the pre-announcement PDF through the finished version arriving on your phone.

Seeing that there are no fewer than 12 steps involved in bringing an Android update to a carrier-based device (as well as the waiting time for carrier approval, which isn’t even mentioned on this diagram) won’t make waiting time frustration any easier, but it certainly does put things in perspective.

Tesla taps Apple manufacturing veteran to lead vehicle manufacturing technologies

Tesla seems to be joining many other Silicon Valley companies in hiring employees away from Apple. Only weeks after poaching Apple Mac Hardware Vice President Doug Field to run Vehicle Design, we have discovered that Tesla has made another notable hire from the Cupertino tech giant: Rich Heley. He was hired away from Apple in November and joined Tesla in that same month, according to his LinkedIn profile:

While Heley’s name is not as famous as Field’s or Apple senior executives, his job has been critical to Apple’s success over the past decade. While Apple’s claim to fame has been its integration of hardware, software, and services, manufacturing and design techniques are what allow Apple to produce high-quality devices in mass quantities.

Heley has contributed to manufacturing, design, and supply chain management for Apple across several different positions. Most recently, Heley led teams relating to designing new manufacturing techniques (shown above). Also on his LinkedIn, Heley describes his new role at Tesla:

Sr. Director of Manufacturing Technology at Tesla tasked with taking the most advanced car in the world and making it even better. The scope includes advances in Vehicle, Power Train and Battery technologies by conforming the manufacturing process to the best possible design without compromise. Bringing the fit, finish, and materials used to a level unprecedented in the automotive industry as well as continuing to advance the performance and efficiency through advances in manufacturing.

Heley’s experience with developing the techniques and materials used to produce devices such as the iPhone and iPod will be invaluable to Tesla, an electric vehicle company with large ambitions relating to manufacturing, design, and materials, Simultaneously, this is likely a significant departure for Apple, but, in the long run, Apple also likely has several engineers who could replace Heley.

Besides Field and Heley, Tesla has hired multiple designers and engineers from Apple. The most notable Tesla hire besides Field and Heley was George Blankenship in 2010 to run Tesla stores. However, Blankenship has since departed Tesla. Blankenship is former retail executive for both Apple and Gap.

My Top iPad VPN Accessories for Business

If you"ve walked through an electronics store or airport (but I repeat myself), you"ll likely have noticed the colonization of these places by iDevice accessories. Cover, leads, converters and a bewildering array of head phones. There are many accessories to complement your iPad VPN. I like music as much as the next guy but draw the line at (another) set of headphones that cost as much as the flight I"m about to take. That said, here are the accessories that are essential to me.

Telefunken XO iPad Pen - it"s not cheap but after you"ve gotten bored with the crayon-esque efforts of other vendors, treat yourself to the one iPad VPN pen that actually works. Kudos to Telefunken on the regular app updates that add functionality and enhance performance.

AppleTV - okay so it"s not exactly an *iPad* accessory but it is beautifully implemented way to get iPad content onto a HDMI TV or projector. For some reason, the ubiquitous iPhone docks for stereos never seem to fit iPads and I"ve never seen a 30 pin extender to allow cheating. Solution, AppleTV and a HDMI cable - quality tunes, movies or just funny cat videos in all their 50" plasma glory.

Kanex ATV Pro - the eagle eyed amongst you read the previous item and scoffed - Most office or meeting room projectors don"t have HDMI! AppleTV is just a home theater toy! Well... not quite. The smart folks at Kanex have produced the ATV Pro - an Apple approved HDMI to VGA with 3.5mm audio output. And it"s powered via the HDMI so no nasty cables. Together, these two make it possible to waltz into any meeting and look pretty swish as you wirelessly present from your iPad even if the projector is older than you are.

Many businesspeople use their iPad VPN for to listen to music whilst on the go. Headphones - the ones that came with your iPad are okay but you can greatly improve the long term (over an hour or so) experience of listening to music on your iPad VPN. This is a bewildering area so rather than recommend a single model; I"ll make some general recommendations. First off, noise cancelling (active) head phones and full size headphones require more power than most others - this can be a concern if you plan to fall asleep listening on a flight, awaking to find your battery dented.

Personally, I can"t stand them and find the only thing worse than using them to be price - you can spend $200 on a set. Better (to me at least) is the infinitely cuter sounding "canal-buds". These are cheaper, a big lift over the Apple standard and, best of all, don"t sound like a segment on "America"s Funniest Insertion Tragedies". (A show I would totally watch if anyone"s in the industry).

A quality case - Somewhat further down the cool list, your iPad case protects not just your $500+ investment but also the data you have in it. I"ve yet to find a case for the 2nd and 3rd gen iPads that is as good as the Apple "moleskin" for the iPad 1.

A MiFi - a MiFi is a cellphone without the phone or screen. Simply put, it"s a 3G modem with an onboard battery and enough operating system to attach to cellular and rebroadcast it via WiFi. So, even if your iPad is Wi-Fi only, you can have net access anywhere there is signal. This does suppose that you have an airtime contract for your MiFi but it"s when travelling that this really makes sense. When you arrive, simply buy a pre-pay or pay as you go contract from a local carrier and pop it into the MiFi. Now you have Internet access across your iPad, cellphone or even laptop. And you can share it with travelling colleagues or just bask in the glory of being the only one without massive data roaming bill when you get back!

If you have an old Android smartphone, these can be used as MIFIs via their tethering function. Whether you use an older smartphone or a MiFi, note that these units don"t support more than five connected devices so don"t give the password to too many people lest you find yourself locked out!
