Why Galaxy Tab is Better than iPad

In the tablet wars that are raging around us today, the Apple iPad remains the undisputed king of the pack. Though there are many worthy competitors that can give the iPad a run for its money (like the Motorola XOOM and the BlackBerry Playbook), Apple"s offering is still the benchmark against which this industry is measured. The new iPad 2 has come out with some additional features, the lack of which was most people"s common complaint against the iPad, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab is still the first proper Android based tablet that stood up against the iPad, and did not fade away into invisibility.

As already mentioned, most of the deficiencies of the iPad (like the lack of a camera, for instance) were removed in the iPad 2, but in this Buzzle article we will be talking about the original iPad. Even though its screen size and user interface were great, there were certain areas where the Samsung Galaxy Tab trumped the iPad in functionality.

Why Samsung Galaxy Tab is Better than iPad?

A specs comparison will show that there is very little to distinguish between these two devices (Note that we are talking about the original 7" Galaxy Tab, and not the recently released 10.1" model or the upcoming 8.9" model). The major points of difference between the two was the screen size and the availability of a camera. With that in mind, here are some of the major reasons for Samsung"s superiority.

  1. The Galaxy Tab is much easier to hold in one hand then the iPad due to its smaller size, and this is very useful when one is reading Ebooks or watching movies. Holding a bigger iPad will lead to one"s hands getting tired faster, and in this area the Tab is far more friendly. This advantage is also aided by the fact that the Tab weighs 13.4 ounces, a little more than half the weight of the iPad.

  2. The Galaxy Tab supports flash based websites, and this is great news since most websites still use a lot of flash based content. Apple and Adobe have a long standing feud, so flash based websites will never work on the iPad in the foreseeable future.

  3. Even though clicking pictures with a relatively giant iPad is not feasible, the presence of a camera would have been nice. The Galaxy Tab has a 3 MP camera at the back, and even a 1.3 MP camera at the front, and this is a major reason why Galaxy Tab is better. This is a massive advantage (Admittedly one which the iPad 2 has solved).

  4. With the iPad you are stuck with the onboard memory that you get (16GB, 32GB or 64GB). The Galaxy Tab has 16GB or 32GB of onboard memory and you can insert a microSD card (maximum of 32GB) and increase storage space. One may argue that this is still lesser than the 64GB model (or on par), but then you must remember that the 64GB iPad model is $200 more expensive than the 16GB model.

  5. The iPad can only function on the 3G network of AT&T, but the Tab has no such limitations. Any service providers 3G network can be accessed by the Tab, as long as one has a valid data plan.

  6. The multitasking that you can carry out on the Android platform, and hence the Galaxy Tab, is true multitasking. On the other hand, the iPad lets you multitask only with native apps. Hence, one cannot carry out multitasking with third party apps like Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, etc.

  7. One of its biggest advantages is the ability to make calls on the device (both voice calls and video calls). This is a feature that is blatantly missing from the iPad because it will kill the iPhones market, but Samsung can afford to offer this. Talking on the Tab with it held next to your face is impossible though, so you will have to use a Bluetooth headset or a hands free kit.

  8. People who have used the iPad will confirm that typing on it for prolonged periods is impossible. The keys are simply too big and too wide apart, and keyboard accessories are way too expensive for everyone to own. The smaller size of the Tab makes it easier to type large texts, and the innovative Swype method of typing makes it easier for users.

  9. One significant advantage that the Tab enjoys over the iPad is the advantage of Android over iOS. That is the ability to customize the home screen any way you see fit, and also put up as many widgets as you want on the homescreen. The iOS is a great operating system, but the lack of widgets and customization is one of its primary deficiencies.

But you must remember that the iPad is the real pioneer in this advanced tablet market, and there is a reason why its sales figures are phenomenal. It is an absolutely stunning device to work with, and the new iPad 2 has raised the bar even higher. The Galaxy Tab was the first proper rival to the iPad, and this was just a list of some of the areas where the Tab is better.
